.Character Appearance.
Eye Color -- dark, dark brown, but due to her OI, the sclera are slightly blue.
Eternal Trait -- her OI and all its side effects (bone delicacy, blue sclera, heart problems, etc.)
Height --4’6”, thanks to very advanced technology, often experimental.
Weight -- 60 lbs.
Overall Appearance -- You might look at Kaelyn’s height and think, what is a twelve year old doing as a scientist? People often mistake her for a child – when she was 6, people thought she was 3. OI means that people are short – she was lucky to break 4 feet, and she’s grateful for that. She’s very thin and knobbly, and often a limb will be pale and dry, and very thin, because she’ll have just gotten a cast off. The precious days when she is without her wheelchair or braces are rare, due to the extreme brittleness of her bones.
Contrary to her dark brown eyes and hair, she is very, very pale – in part from having casts as much as she doesn’t, and partly because she rarely goes outside. She doesn’t see the point – her work is inside, and there is nothing for her to do out there anyway – she’s too frail to survive on her own.
Her disease is evident in her looks. In addition to her short stature and odd eyes, her rib cage is slightly barrel-shaped. It would have been worse, if not for the wonders of technology. Her face is pointy and triangle-shaped, another common trait among people with OI. Over all, she looks far, far younger than she is.
.Personal Character Information.
Personality -- For all the misfortune that's come her way, kaelyn is very good-natured, as long as she's not confronted with things she doesn't like. Even if she's wheelchair bound, or uncomfortable because of leg braces, she's still pretty optimistic. She rarely snaps at other people, the scientists who are crueler than she is are excluded. She's usually ready with a joke or a smile, to relax anyone if their uncomfortable. She's very easy to get along with, if you don't mind her being a little geeky - i mean, she's known what a clavicle is since she was four. She learned all the fancy names of the bones when she was seven. So yes, a little geeky.
However, when faced with something that makes her uncomfortable or angry, she changes. Her reaction is usually anger - she doesn't like being out of her comfort zone. Ask her about her father, torture a test subject not in the name of science, act like you know more than her, and worst of all, act like she's less than useful because she's a shifter, or so sick - she won't be happy. She cant hit you or kill you - she's do more damage to herself. But she does carry a gun - yes, people, she does. If a shifter were to try to escape, or someone were to break in, what else is she supposed to do?
Which leads us to this - she's cautious. She's the type that looks around the corner before ever making an appearance. She doesn't like going into situations blind, and more likely than not she won't do it. She'd rather do a ton of research first. But for all that, she's curious. She wants to know the world and every fact in it - she wants to understand. Offer her knowledge and she'll eat it up if she can.
History -- Lynn Chandler and Nikolai Dante were so happy to be together, despite all the racial differences. They were young and in love – what else could be said for a female human marrying a shifter?
Yes, they had heard of the rare cases (between the rareness of children between the races in general and the fact that not all of them were sick) where a child was sick, or died, when it’s parents were not of the same race. But, being young people with the belief that bad things couldn’t happen to them, they decided to give it a try. It was beyond difficult for the couple to conceive, but it finally worked.
Now, let's skip ahead, to five months pregnant. W'll skip the happy glow of pregnancy stuff to when Lynn went in for a check-up. The worst news - the baby had broken bones. This didn't happen often - and pressing on the stomach proved what they feared - Osteogenesis Imperfecta. They didn't know what type. They just prayed she survived.
She did - barely. It took a C-Section (natural birth would crush her fragile bones) and in a period of three weeks she had to be resucitated twice. But they could bring her home. It was hard - Type lll OI is not merciful. She rolled over and broke three ribs. Her bones were broken on a regular basis. And that was when her father started to drift.
He had planned on a family. He wanted a wife who had dinner on the table, and a beautiful daughter who played and adored him. He didn't want to work two jobs to pay for her medical needs. He didn't want to lose his wife to his daughter. He didn't want someone so needy. He was growing distant. Emotionally, and then one day...he just left.
It was her mother who stayed. Her human mother who worked two jobs and still beggared herself to help her child. The woman who payed every medical bill and fed her child a full portion of healthy food by living off burgers when she could afford it. Because of her, Kaelyn still grew up with a comparatively healthy life.
And then came the windfall, when she was seven. Neither of them had known they had a relative, a wealthy one. But when they died, they left their money to the two. And then everything changed.
Kaelyn had the best care. Her limbs were rodded to help correct the anomalies in how they grew, and to keep them from breaking so much. She got a new wheelchair when she needed one, not just every three years - do you know how painful it is to sit in a wheelchair for hours when you're six and it was fitted when you were three? - and leg braces. She got infusions of medications that meant she could walk, period, without giving herself fractures. Life was much better, until she was twelve.
That was when her mother was openly sick. It had been growing for years, but she only then told her daughter. Years upon years of malnutrition, and what she did eat being mostly bad, even the good nutrition they had now couldn't help her. She had had tuberculosis for years - it was too far progressed now to save her, and had led to other diseases. She was dying.
Kaelyn was devastated when her mother died. Her mother was the one who had stuck with her no matter how bad things got, and it was terrible to lose her. She was taken care of, but she never really stopped grieving for her.
It was then that her interest in the SEG came about. Not being a soldier - she wouldn't suit that work. A dog could jump on her, and it would crush her chest. No, what she wanted was to be a scientist. To learn to cure her disease, and to just learn in general. She knew she would probably never get in - but even the thickest, most prejudiced SEG officer could see that she presented no threat and honestly wanted to help. Not to wipe them out - but the ones that were noticed most often were the ones who killed people. Or, at least, that was how she rationalized it.
She trained to be a scientist for years - genes facinated her, with her own faulty ones. Ever since she was a child, she'd loved learning everything and anything - her body failed her, but her mind never did. Nature's way of making it up to her? She was absolutely brilliant, and she ate up all the things she learned.
.RP Example.
Really, Cat didn’t know what she was looking for by being here. She didn’t even know why she was here? Could she really offer Max any comfort? But…when she thought about it, there were lots of reasons why she should be here.
Maybe it was that when she first came here, alone and aching from the abandonment of her parents, it was Max who came to talk to her. Maybe it was that Max hadn’t turned away from her, even with all her problems. Maybe it was that he was always there when she was hurting. Or maybe it was just that when Max was in pain, all she wanted to do was take that pain away, even if it meant taking it herself.
Because the truth was, Maxwell Toyama meant more to her than almost anyone – he even rivaled Jon in that respect. She didn’t know why, and she didn’t know how, but even though their relationship had been rocky almost from the start, it had lasted. And when Max was cut, she bled right along with him. She didn’t know how, but there was no going back. Their relationship was too complicated for words, but it was there, and it was a very strong thing.
It hurt when Max retreated away from her, but she persisted, sitting down next to him, and putting her hand on his back. Because all she wanted to do was help him, and what would hurt more than her leaving? Because walking away meant abandonment, it meant being alone, it meant she didn’t care. And she did care. A lot.
She waited for him to say something, or to react to her at all, besides his subtle retreat when her heart her voice. And when he did start to speak, she listened patiently when he tried to say something, waiting through his tears and false starts. She didn’t really know what he was trying to say until she had the whole picture. It surprised her, his question. What had brought this on?
But still, she had to answer, and she needed to think about that. Because really, there were a few reasons why she might have hated him, but when she thought about it, they weren’t his fault. She had her own problems, and she’d put him through enough pain that the times when he stood by her meant that much more. They both had their problems, and Max had accepted hers with open arms. The least she could do was not hate him for his.
“I don’t hate you because you didn’t do anything wrong,” she said honestly. Really, there was only one real reason why she might hate him, and that was Kuroda – but that wasn’t his fault. He hadn’t asked for that, and the only thing that had made her walk away was his involvement, and that had stopped. So no, she didn’t hate him. “We’ve all got our problems, Max. You dealt with mine. How could I hate you for yours?”
She continued to let her hand rest on his back, thumb moving up and down in a slight rubbing gesture while she tried to comfort him. She was still wondering what it was that was upsetting him so badly, so she finally said, “Do you want to tell me?” It wasn’t meant as a hint, only as an invitation to tell if he wanted. And a way to let him know that she was still listening, whatever he had to say.
